This is the side door of the church but by far the largest and most beautiful. It forms a spectacular frame for a wedding picture.

HISTORY OF THE HOUSE

Maison Marcal is the largest house in this medieval town.

The building is at "Place du Moustier" with its fountain. It is widely known as "Maison" or "Hôtel Jarrige de la Morélie". This was the home of the sergeant or judge of the city, the king's representative called "vigier".

Maison Marcal is one of the few remaining examples of 16th century architecture in Saint Yrieix that is still intact.

It was well protected in the event of conflicts or wars.

It is likely that the house is built on the site of a 12th century medieval castle.

Young Henri of Navarre, the future King Henri IV slept in one of the rooms on the first floor before the night of the famous battle of La Roche L'Abeille, where the Protestants won on 25th June 1569.

HISTORY OF THE CHURCH
L’HISTOIRE DE L’ÉGLISE
THE CHURCH

The history of the Saint Yrieix area really begins in the Iron Age, around 600 BC. The oldest signs of human settlement and mining date from that time.

Many agricultural areas were established in Roman times. Among them, "Attanum" in the heart of medieval Saint Yrieix, was where pottery dating back to the 1st century AD was found. In 572 this area was then chosen to be converted into

a monastery by a Gallo-Roman priest named Aredius. He entrusted its destiny to the most prestigious of religious institutions of its time: Saint Martin of Tours. During the following centuries, a town grew around this "monastery" or "moustier" while the monks were replaced by a chapter of canons which lasted until the Revolution. A variation of the Latin "Sancti Aredii" became the name of the city of Saint Yrieix, with an addition of "d'Attane" to distinguish it from six other places with the same name. But in the end, for reasons that aren't entirely clear, Saint Yrieix La Perche was chosen.

Between 1765 and 1768 the surgeon Jean-Baptiste Darnet and the apothecary Villaris discovered the first kaolin in France and a royal porcelain manufactory was established. This industry brought Limoges its fortunes in the following century. Nevertheless Saint Yrieix retained significant activity in this area. The production of madeleine cakes and nationwide printing were added during the 19th and 20th century and remain major employers.
